Making Paper

The Wilson Wildcats are finishing up the school year in art class by making handmade paper and relief prints.  The students and I have enjoyed making our own paper and each day students teach me new techniques to refine this messy, hands on art process. I am learning that the paper takes a long time to dry on rainy days. Here are some pictures from our first batch.

Cereal Boxes

4th grade graphic designers invented a cereal brand and then designed a box that would grab the attention of their customers

Half and Half Portraits

Students enjoyed drawing pop icons and animals for this project. 5th and 6th grade artists practiced using value (lights and darks) to enhance their portrait skills. They chose a photograph for half the face and used pencil and eraser to shade the other half.

4th Grade Creative Mugs

4th grade has been getting creative with their mug designs. They formed mugs using the slab method and added details like faces, symbols, and handles. The students are now applying glaze to prepare their work for the final firing in the kiln.

The students came up with the idea to make fans to dry the glaze faster in between coats!

3-D Playground Designs

3rd Grade students imagined what the playground will look like at the new Wilson. They used strips of paper to make three-dimensional forms and to make their dreams a reality. Some students wanted to recreate the old playground so that they could share what it looked like with younger students.
